DimeStories is a monthly Flash Fiction open mic event that began 19 years ago in The Grove, a knitting supply and book store in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego. I began reading excerpts from short stories I’d written for my horror collection Spooky Mo then eventually started writing new flash fiction pieces. It was the only gathering for writers I knew about, and despite usually)= being the lone POC in the crowd, I showed up every first Friday of the month. It was the first and only writing community I knew about in San Diego and I was determined to become part of it.
It was at DimeStories that I met Judy Reeves who, who eventually invited me to join the board of San Diego Writers, Ink, a marvelous nonprofit that offers an array of writing classes, workshops and literary events in virtually all genres, from memoir to poetry.
Sadly I stopped attending DimeStories for several years when the event was moved to various other locations. The demands of life and an extended book tour for my debut novel The Mango Bride made it impossible to come up with flash fiction every month. But when Amy Wallen brought the DimeStories back to the original location, which had by then evolved into The Book Catapult, how could I not show up with a new story?
The readers were wonderful, the crowd was welcoming and my story was voted one of four audience favorites. To listen to the winning tales, please click on the link below;
